Healthy cells and mitochondria are essential for the general well being and a long life. Through epigenetic mechanisms the cell can react to different environmental stimuli, adapt to new circumstances, and regulate mitochondrial functions.

In her latest study, Ulrike Krammer was able to measure the positive effects of exercise with a drop of finger blood through epigenetic biomarkers such as microRNAs and DNA methylation, which could provide new insights into exercise- and diet-induced mitochondrial biogenesis.
